Guideline based on standard sizing charts. Fan blades should sit at least 18 in from walls and 7 ft above the floor; for sloped or high ceilings use a longer downrod. For damp/wet locations choose a damp- or wet-rated fan.

What size ceiling fan do I need?
Match blade span to room area: up to 75 sq ft → 29–36 in; 76–144 sq ft → 36–44 in; 145–225 sq ft → 44–52 in; 225–400 sq ft → 52–56 in. Large great rooms may need a 56 in+ fan or two fans. Keep blades 7 ft above the floor and 18 in from walls.
