Air Filter MERV Finder
Air Filter MERV Rating Finder
Find the right MERV rating for your home’s HVAC air filter, based on what you want it to capture.
A general guide. Higher MERV captures more but restricts airflow — very high ratings (MERV 13+) on a thin 1 in filter can strain some furnaces and blowers. Check your HVAC manufacturer’s maximum recommended MERV, and change filters on schedule.

What MERV rating do I need?
MERV 8 handles basic dust; MERV 11 is the sweet spot for allergies and pets; MERV 13 captures smoke and fine particles and is the highest most homes should use. Going higher restricts airflow, so pair MERV 13 with a thicker 4–5 in filter when you can. Replace 1 in filters every 60–90 days.
| MERV | Captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | Dust, pollen, lint | Basic homes |
| 11 | Pet dander, fine pollen | Allergies & pets |
| 13 | Smoke, bacteria | Sensitive households |
